It is understood that steps are being taken to induce either Mr. Fendall or Mr. Williams to retire from the Ashley contest, both being Liberals and local candidates. It is felt by the majority of the residents that it would be a fatal error to run both against Mr. Moorhouse. It is probable that Mr. Williams will be induced to retire. Auckland, August 23. Mr. Joseph Newman announces himself as a candidate for City West. New Plymouth, August 25. Captain Skeet has addressed the electors of Grey and Bell, and has received a vote of confidence. Wanganui, August 23. Mr. Ballance held a meeting at Waitotora, and a vote of-confidence was carried by 33 to 4. Sir W. Fox held a meeting at Waverley to-day, after Mr. Ballance. The chairman refused to allow any amendment to be moved on .the vote of confidence proposed, and declared it carried without counting hands. Mr. M'Lean received a vote of confidence at Bulls, and Mr. Willis one at Marton. .■ Timaiuj, August 23. Mr. Woollcombe, the Opposition candidate, received a unanimous vote of confidence from a crowded meeting at Pleasant , Point last night.
