The lire appears to have originated from the fire-place near the librarian's desk. The main body of the fire was in the library, and flames were seen bursting through the tour of the building directly after the alarm was given. Tho Fire Brigade worked manfully, aud succeeded in extinguishing the flames before the whole building was destroyed. 'The reading room was totally destroyed, and one-third of thy library was also burnt.
