(FROM pt.X OVJf CORRESPONDENT.) DUNEDIN. June 17. A fire bj-oko out /ifc the Athenaeum about half-past one o'clock this morning, and did a very considerable amount of damage. The lire appears to have originated from the fire-place near the librarian's desk. The main body of the fire was in the library, and flames were seen bursting through the tour of the building directly after the alarm was given. Tho Fire Brigade worked manfully, aud succeeded in extinguishing the flames before the whole building was destroyed. 'The reading room was totally destroyed, and one-third of thy library was also burnt. The building aud shops were insured for L 3500, in the New Zealand Company, L-2000 of the amount being 011 thp destroyed portion. does not, however, cover the loss. Arrived—Otago, ship, from Glasgow. CHRISTCHURCH. June 17. A firo broke out at 0 o'clock this morning at the Hereford Boarding-house, Durham-street south, which completely destroyed the building. . At yesterday's ineKtingof the Council it was resolved not to co-oporatp wifclj. the Sydenham Borough Council in the matter of forming the belt, but to spend LSOO in the city itself, for the relief of the-un-employed. The Oiirivtcjiurch Tramway Company intend to vhj? first of the series of tramways in the city in about a inonth.

A rather Btorß>y ting was held at Riccarton last night in reference .to the dismissal by the Education Board of Mr. Wilson, teacher of the Riccarton school, on tho' ground, tjjat lie'declined to instruct the children in .drill. Jliy Wilson declared that the primary cause of dismissal was liis refusal : to allow the Rev. C. Bowen (Commissioner) to introduce religious instruction into the sgliool. This was not supported by the 'facts before t}jc meeting, and the majority of those pr.es.ent strongly declined to accept them as true.
