SALE OF TOTARA STOCK.

Following upon the sub-division and sale of the Totara Estate, the sale of the stock upon this magnificent property was commenced to-day by Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., in conjunction with Messrs. Connell and Clowes. There was an immense gathering of farmers and others from the surrounding districts; and even Dunedin, Christchurch, and Timaru were represented. A special train which left Oamaru for Totara shortly before twelve o'clock, was literally crowded with passengers, principally composed of farmers. Immediately after arrival on the ground, and before entering on the real business of the day, a substantial luncheon was freely partaken of. Directly this was over, Mr. Stephenson mounted the rostrum, and commenced operations by o3ering a fiDe lot of draught horses. Mr. Stephenson explained that the mares were all stinted to Renfrew Jock. The bidding w-as spirited, and the prices p.b.tamed in most instances were highly satisfactory, more especially considering the number of horses offered, and the tightness of the money market. Thirty mares were sold, the prices obtained ranging from 90 guineas (given for the bay mare Susie by Mr, M'Auly), down to 18 guineas. One brought qy«p SQ guineas,, six between'? 6 and 80 guineas, one hetween CO and 70 guineas, three between 50 and 60 guineas, and twelve between 4Q and 50

guineas. For the fillies, all three-year-olds with one exception, the prices ranged from S3 guineas down to 34 guineas. The geldings had not all been sold when our messenger left the land. The prices obtained ranged from 40 to 50 guineas. The hacks had also to bo submitted to the hammer. To-morrow the cattle and sheep will bo offered.
