RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (fiefnre T. W. Pabkrr. Esq., R.M.) John M'Master was charged on remand with stealing a swag from the Criterion Hotel on the loth March. As no evidence was forthcoming, the prisoner was discharged. Robert M. Taggart was charged with unlawfully obtaining half a ton of coal from John Orr. The prisoner was arrested at Hampden, and having only been brought to Oamaru this morning, a remand was granted till Saturday, in order to produce witnesses for the defence. Frederick Gallachan was charged with crossing the railway line at Thames-street while the exnress train was in motion.
Thomas Wildish, signalman at the Thames-street crossing, deposed that he recollected the 31st March. He heard the express train approaching the crossing, and went into the road. Accused was coming towards him, and witness said, "Look up, please." When witness saw he had no intention of stopping, he tried to shove him hack, and said he would knock him down with the flag. Accused pushed the flag away, and insisted on going across, which ho did. The train was within six or seven yards of the cross- | ing. Cross-examined by accused : —There is no written notice posted up to prevent people crossing. I tried to prevent your crossing, and did not use any bad language towards yon, This wb,s all the evidence. Tsxi Worship, after remarking on the foolhardiness of people crossing when a train was close at hand, fined the accused 20s. James Waddell, for allowing a horse and spring cart to wander at large in Thames-street, was fined 12s. Robert Keenan, for furiously driving in Itchen-street on the 19th inst., was fined 40s. John Grant, for driving five cows through Thames -street within prohibited hours, was fined ss,
