wc observe that preparations are being to receive His Excellency in a befitting manner in the various towns through which he will pass on his contemplated tour ; and we arc glad that the Harbor Board and Municipal Councils of Oaraaru have also decided to evidence the respect due to His Excellency, and believe that the Waitaki County Council will be only to glad to co-operate. There will, of course, be what the Mayor terms the " inevitable address " —that has from custom become as indispensable to a Governor's reception as red currant jelly ia to shoulder of mutton ; and, although we suppose that the time occupied in reading the shortest possible address might be better spent, we suppose that for " Anld Lang Syne'' an address must read. But wc think that there should not be any expensive and extensive ; preparations made for his Excellency s ! reception. Such folly would be as dis--1 tasteful to his Excellency as it would be 1 wasteful. Three hearty cheers from the I public would be far more grateful to his i Excellency than a reception accompanied jby the greatest possible pomp and | pageantry.
