[FROM our OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN". December 6. Sir John Richardson died at half-past two o'clock this afternoon, at the Imperial Hotel, of dropsy. A universal feeling of regret is clearly displaying itself. Sir John's death is a sad loss to the community. Ten declarations of insolvency have been filed this week. With the exception of two Palmerston farmers with liabilities of over L2OOO, the cases are all small.

There was a scene at the meeting of the creditors of Beck and Tonks, corn merchants, who recently failed for about L 21,000. Buck wished to be present, but as he would not acknowledge himself a debtor be was requested to retire. r \ his he refused to do, and therefore a formal motion was passed again asking him to leave. A second refusal caused the landlord of the hotel to be summoned. As lie could not succeed, however, in inducing Beck to leave, he threatened to brine a policeman, and went out for that purpose, ile did not succeed in obtaining a constable, but he returned witli a number of assistants and proceeded to remove Beck by force, Beck at first offered a determined ro-:-i.-.tnnee. and a scuiiie took place in the room. Seeing that be was overmatched. Beck iini'.llv consented to leave the roum. and the business was proceeded wiih. Mr. lilaekett lias reported on the tramway, if... notes that they habitually run over ten miles an hour in wide streets and iour m Manners-street : also that the steam is allowed to escape, though the promoters held out as a special inducement that there would lie no smoke. Jde recommends, therefore, not that the use of steam power should be disallowed, but thai it shall be permitted only under a strict observance of the regulations (1) as to stipulated speed in all eases ; (2) as to the distance at which trams may follow each other ; (3) as to the suppression of steam and the smoke nuisance. A letter embracing the terms of the report has accordingly been sent by the Government to the Tramway Company.
