LIVINGSTONE.

(from our own correspondent. > October 26.

A meeting of the Miners' Association was held in the schoolhouse this evening, the President, Mr Roberts, in the chair. The Secretary (Mr Farquharson) read a telegram from S. E. Shrimski, Esq.,-M.H.R., in reply to that of the Miners' Association re removal of polling booth, to the effect that the Hon. R. Campbell had promised to have the matter rectified. He also read a letter from the Clerk of the Waitaki County Council, expressing his regret that the Miners' Association had resorted to such extreme measures in reference to the point at issue, and expressing his belief that had their member (Mr. Sutherland) presented to the Council an application for a polling booth, a special meeting of the Council would have been held to consider the question. He writes further that even now he saw no obstacle to that course being adopted, in the event of a contest taking place, otherwise he thought no Returning Officer would be required. On the motion of Mr. Storach, it was resolved that the Clerk's letter be acknowledged, and that the Council be requested- to make Livingstone the head polling place for the riding, so as to suit the convenience of the majority of the electors. It was also proposed by Mr. Smith, and seconded by Mr. Frater, " That the Secretary be empowered to write to Mr. Sumpter, of Oamaru, asking him to allow himself to be nominated as Councillor, and pledging on behalf of the Miners' Association, their influence and support in securing his return. A communication was read from the Chief Commissioner of the Waste Lands Board, stating, in reply to a letter from the Association, that in reference to Run 92 the sale was already arranged, and it would be very difficult to make'ian alteration now. Mining

interests •would, however, tie duly attended to. After some discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Storach, seconded by Mr. Botting, "That immediately on the arrival of the Surveyor a Committee meeting be called to consider what steps should he taken to conserve the mining interest. Some matter of routine business were considered, and an account for printing due to TV. J. Steward and Co. passed. This concluded the business.
