ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

IWe tiro not responsible for the opinions expressed by out correspondents.] THE LAGOON NUISANCE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL. S IK) —I really do not know what Oamaru would do without tlie Lagoon, it has boon such a fruitful subject for all sorts of suggestions. Some years ago Mr. J. T. Evans thought that Nature had provided a very suitable) locality for the dock, in fact he was so gushingly eloquent on the subject that some persons thought it quite practicable, and all those large concrete blocks lying just outside the creek, on the shingle bank, were intended for the retaining wall, but, to Mr. Evans' surprise, a practical engineer dared to dili'ur iu opinion, the said blocks are now bleaching in the sun, a warning to all would-be engineers. This dock w a3 to accommodate the Home ships, but I notice that there may be Home ships of various sizes. Ronayne and Cottrell can supply Homo ships by the dozen, and they would really look very pretty so they would. Then a Harbor Master would be required—Toodles would be the right man in the right place. A Harbor Board would bo necessary ; Professor lies could bo Chairman, and the Secretary Mr. Finch. The only way that I can see of doing away with the confounded, nuisance is to make mo a present of that dirty hole, which Toodles prophesies will breed all sorts of fever in tho town. You ask, what whould I do with it 1 Why, I would build a retaining wall of concrete on the creek side, and then build a wall all round tho sides, and concrete tho lloor. On tho top of theso walls I would place strong joists, then build a block of splendid warehouses. I would put in a siding to carry grain and wool right down in the basoment lloor ; I would put in another siding to tho ground lloor, and I am game to say that it would make tho best block of stores in Otago, and the rents .accruing therefrom would be a mine of wealth. What! can it be possible that the Mayor could sanction £."000 to be wasted in tilling up a valuablo plot of land, which some day would cost £OOOO to take away again I Surely this money would go a long way towards building a splendid block of buildings. Could not all those concroto blocks now lying useless on the beach bo utilised iu some way. If this work was carried out, I don't know what Toodles would do. I should almost tremble for the eonsequouces. Hon: and Anuhok.
