FIRST TRAIN FROM PALMERSTON TO DUNEDIN.
(FROM OUR OWS CORRESPONDENT ) pALMEKSTONf, August 26. Saturciaj 7 was quite a red-letter day for Palmerston, having had cho honor of despatching the first through train to Dutiedin. A train was waiting the arrival of the 8. J■> p. in. from Oamaru to convey Mr. Lvi.'ni'. Government Engineer, Mr. Grant, Tiv.fiic Slanagei*, and other notables to town <m their way from Wellington. The train left here at 8.25, but unfortunately on arriving at the points connecting t!te goods shed with the main line, the engine ran off the track and the above gentlemen were, no doubt unwillingly, compelled to delay their departure for a few hours until the engine was replaced on the lino. They ultimately took their departure about 11.45. I hear that the only damage done was the bending of the rods connected with the break, which had to be repaired before the train could proceed. Fortunately the engine had not attained- any speed, otherwise the consequences might have been serious. The cause of the mishap was, no doubt, owing to someone's neglect of the points, which must have been open instead of shut. The train did not arrive at its destination until 3 a.m. yesterday.
