A RAILWAY ACROSS THE ISLAND.

Greymoutil; August 13. A crowded meeting was held at the Public Hall last evening, for the purpose of urging upon .the Government the necessity of connecting by railway the East and. West Coasts of this Island. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. The following resolutions were carried enthusiastically :

urge upon the Government the necessity •of. constructing without delay a line of railway to connect the East and West Coasts of this Island by the shortest and best route, and which .-will most promote, the development of the resources of the country." "'That in the opinion of this meeting the southern route by Haast Pass, proposed by the Hokitika 'Railway Committee, would not meet auy of the conditions above mentioned, it being of eno.-nnms length and traversing a line of' country which would necessitate a cost quite beyond rhemansof (he Colonv at '< he present time, and would be utterly useless to this portion of the Colony." "'That all evidence goes to prove, that, thediest ami most, profitable line would j be by one or other routes by way of the' OreyYalley to connect wit u the jNorlh I Canterbury lines."
