DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (reuter's telegrams, per press agency) Melbourne, July 25. In the Council Sir C. Sladen's Reform Bill has passed the second reading. The Postmaster-General supported the Bill, with the following amendments :—Omission of plurality of votes, and addition of division of the province. He said he differed from his colleagues on the subject of reform, but if his conduct is likely to embarras them, he would resign his portfolio. In the Assembly, the debate re the purchase of the Hobson's Bay railway lasted till after midnight, when the purchase was affirmed by 52 to 9. Probably the loan for the purpose will be immediately placed in the London market. Later. The Postmaster-General has resigned his portfolio. Stevenson and Sons, warehousemen, and the other defendants concerned in the Customs case have been arrested, but are now out on bail. Sydney, July 25. The Government has decided that the new loan shall only be a million and a half.
