NORTH OTAGO COURSING CLUB.

YESTERDAY. It was hoped that there would be sufficient time before the approach of darkness ! to run off the whole of the first ties, but owing to some time being spent in hunt- , ing for hares, it was found impossible to complete the list. Mechanic and Fly were the first pair placed in the slips, the former proving the winner after a very good course. Spring and Ladybird were the next couple, and a large amount of interest was manifested in them, as they were both well-known performers and had previously had some hard tussles. Immediately after being slipped, Spring made the running, and had things pretty well all his own way. He scored several points before Ladybird showed to the front, and when the latter did assume a prominent position and begin to score rapidly, Spring made a very clever kill and secured the victory. Scaldings deI feated Ophelia easily, and again showed himself to be one of the very best dogs on the field. Magic and Leo ran a long undecided cqurse, the work done by them being so equally divided that the judge declined to decide in favor of either. Crackshot scored an easy victory over St. Bees after a long hard course. Skip and Hamlet had a short spurt, the former, by his superior work at the commencement ' pf the run, proving the winner. It was •

now nearly 5 o'clock, and as darkness was fast approaching, the stewards decided to postpone the conclusion of the meeting until 9 o'clock to-day. TO-DAY'S COURSING.

To-day's proceedings took place on the Totara Estate. The day was again fine, but excessively cold, making top-coats a necessity. There was a very fair muster of spectators at the start, and the number was greatly augmented during the day. Magic and Leo commenced tlie sport by running off their undecided course. Magic got the best of it from the slips, leading up and working very well. The hare took a fence, and Leo declining to follow, Magic won as she liked. Frolic then ran a bye in company with .Sunbeam, and a capital course took place. The second ties were then started. Mechanic and Spring were the first to compete. A fine strong hare was started, and a good run took place. At first Spring appeared to have the best of the hunt, but, warming up to his work, Mechanic gave Spring a clean go-by, and had nearly the whole of the work to himself. Spring only once afte wards showed up prominently. Mechanic won with something to spare. A long hard course took place between Scaldings and Frolic, both dogs running and working remarkably well. The course was given in favor of Scaldings, much to the surprise of many of the spectators, who asserted pretty loudly that the decision was a wrong one. After a little time, a splendid course took place between Magic and Hamlet. Magic lead up from the slips, and for a long time had all the work to herself ; at the finish Hamlet began to show up a little, but the hare was killed before he had a chance of pulling up lost ground, and in consequence suffered a signal defeat. Crackshot ran a bye in company with Cumberland, aud a fine course it was, too, the run being a long one, and the pace a clinker. This completed the second ties, and the only four left in the contest were Mechanic, Scaldings, Magic, and Crackshot. The first pair to compete in the third ties were Mechanic and Scaldings. Mechanic led up from the slips, and did all the work, Scaldings only once showing to the front. Magic and Crackshot had a long course. At the start Magic was unsighted, but when she did obtain sight of the hare, she went up and scored point, after point in rapid succession. Crackshot was outpaced, a fact which might in some measure be attributable to the severe course just previously run by him ; but at the finish lie got in again and began to show up very well. After giving Magic the half-hour's grace to which site was entitled, the deciding course between Mechanic and Magic was started. At the commencement of the hunt Magic had the best of the run, and scored several points before her opponent showed up. Mechanic, on getting in, made the struggle a very even one, but Magic again got in, and scoring a few more points, won i the first Waterloo Cup ever run for in the Colony. It is worthy of note that the winner and runner up are sister and brother, and that they are two years old to-day, having been born on board ship on the passage from Home. They are by Farrier out of Regalia. Farrier was by Cavalier out of Carlton, and Regalia by Rocketer out of Belmontine. Belmontine was out of Fiebe, twice the runner-up in the English Waterloo Cup. Farrier was full brother to Berkdale and Master

j Sam. At the conclusion of the programme, a private match took place between Mr. G. M'Giivin's St, Bees and Mr. D. OT.rie.Vs Swift, foi-Ll.o. St. Bees was the first to show in front, and looked like winner, lint Swift soon got in, and won a long, j hard course.
