A circular lias been sent to all the Government departments to the ell'cct that it has come under the notice of Government that subordinate ollicers of the Government have been in the habit of sending out Government advertisements to papers. The Government therefore notify that in future all Government advertisements must be signed by the Minister of the department. Messrs. J. Bathgate, J. P. Maitland, and the Hon. \V. H. Reynolds are gazetted to-night School Commissioners for the Provincial District of Otago. May 31.

In the Full Court of Appeal this morning, judgment was delivered in the Otago goldstealing case—Regina against Brown—which has a large bearing on partnership cases. The prisoner, Henry Brown,

was indicted in Quoenstown, Otago, for stealing ami c'nl">'"'7li>v" (H ounces of gold, the purt.LiL'...'.i-jj y^ of himself and John Mcllor. At the trial the prisoner's counsel demurred to the indictment, stating that he relied upon the judgment given by Mr. Justice Richmond at Nelson in April, 1872, a similar case, holding that under the- Larceny Act, Amendment Act, 1870, a partner could not to be indicted for stealing partnership property; in other words, holding that the Act of 1870 was a dead letter. The Chief Justice held that the first count in the indictment was good ; but that tlio second, third, and fourth counts wero bad. All the other Judges read a written judgment, concurring with that of the' Chief Justice. The demurror raised tothe conviction was thoreforo overruled.
