RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. j (Before T. W. Pakkkr, Esq., 8..51.) PASSING VALULKSS CHEQUES. F",ink Pogson, alias Reader, was chained, on r -mand, with having, during Apri:, passed, two valueless cheques of the amoi.uc of LIO and L 7 respectively. Gustavus L. Longford, landlord of the Star and Garter Hotel, deposed that he knew the accused. He had reoeivcel a cheque from, accused for LIQ during the month of April last. The cheque produced, and marked A, was the one he received from prisoner. Witness deducted the amount of prisoner's account from the cheque, and gave him the balance in cash, r'aid the cheque into his account at the National Bank, and found it dishonoured. It was on the strength of the cheque bc-iii-.. a good one, and in consequence ox he accused's representations that he wa; a Cliristclnuch gentleman, that ]:■■; --ashed the cheque. Tito amount hud "::■■• 'uen repaid. Tli. prisoner did not put any questions to wirnesi. This was the case for the prosecution. The prisoner, who had nothing to say in las defence, was then committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the L;iairict Court to be held at Oamaru. ASSAULT. Airs. Lamb was charged with having committed an assault upon Airs. Packwood at Kikanui on the 2:>iid instant. On the application of the dofi iidant, who stated that she had only received the summons the previous da}', the case was adjourned until Monday next, to enable hci- b> obtain witnesses. OBSC !:x K LANG L" AG E A charge against Mrs. Lamb of having made use ■ ■:' obscene language towards Mrs. Pack-- iod, was also adjourned until Monday next.
