At the nomination to-day of candidates for the representation of the city in the House of Representatives in the place of Mr. Travers. the following gentlemen were proposed : Mr. Edward Pearce, old member, Mr. William Hutchinson, late Mayor, and Mr. G. E. Barton, barrister. Mr" Barton's son addressed the elector on behalf of his father. The show of hands was largely in favour of Mr. Barton, while that for .Mr. Pearce was the smallest. The poll will be taken on Monday. Thomas Scott was playing at see-saw—-that is, standing back to back with another man with their arms hooked, each alternately raising the other—when the man who was lifting Scott gave way under him, and Scott fell on the back of his head, breaking his neck, Scott's wife committed suicide by shooting herself three years ago owing to the brutal treatmen of her husband. CHIIISTCHUItCH. February 15. Quan Van, a Chinaman, charged with rape, was further remanded to-da}', in order to procure an interpreter from Dunedin. The immigrants per Wanganui were all landed to-day. Must of them are already engaged. At a meeting of the Drainage Board today, the Chairman stated that nothing further had been heard from Mr. Clarke, the Engineer, whose movements appear to be of a very mystical character. Thirty cases of contagious disease were reported to the Board to-day. The medieal officer stated that many of them might be traced to adulterated milk, and urged the Board to have a clause inserted in the Public Health Act to have a strict supervision over dairies.
