DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS
(reuter's telegrams, per press agency.) Melbourne, January 18. The s.s. Normanby arrived at Cooktown yesternight. The Premier has proposed further sales of Crown lands, to give the Assembly the opportunity of deciding whether the system of auction shall be stopped in six months.
Free selectors are petitioning for the remission of interest on their jmrohasemoney for the current year, on account of the drought, Mr. M'Maho.n has resigned his seat for West Melbourne in favour of Mr. Francis, whose election is certain.
The Governor has been presented with an address by the residents of Hamilton, containing expressions of indignation at the illegal acts of Ministers. In his reply, he defended his assent to the dismissal of Civil servants and said he was bound to follow the advise of Ministers on local matters, outside the prerogative of the Crown, or Imperial interest.
The Government intend to carry on the County Charts by the appointment of officials without salaries.
