PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. * DUNEDIK December 22. The Government have received a cablegram from the Agent-General, in which he reports that Colonial securities are nnprecedently high. New Zealand stocks from LI 05 to LlO7. Colonel Reado has been appointed Under-Secretary for Defence.
The Civil police will, from the Ist of January, be under Commissioner Weldon for Middle Island, and Commissioner Shearman for North Island, and will be quite distinct from the Armed Constabulary. Mr. J. Evans Brown contradicts the report that, he lias severed Ids connection with Sir George Grey's party. The meeting to present an address to the city members has been adjourned till after the. holidays.
The Jiarbour Board has arrived at a satisfactory settlement with the Government in reference to its endowments. The steamer Oreti made a successful trial trip despite wretched weather. Some fine shooting was made at the Rifle Association's meeting yesterday. At 400 yards, Nutsford, of the Bruce Rifles, made seven consecutive bulls-eyes ; and at 500 yards Oreagh, of the City Guards, also made seven consecutive bulls-eyes. On dit that Mr. Purcell, a miner near Cromwell, becomes heir to a legacy of L9OOO, which had been laying in the Bank of England since 1822.
Jane Galloway has been committed for trial for perjury.
