(from tub press agency.) e. WELLINGTON. December 21. A Gazette, just issued, notifies in a proclamation that the census of the Colony shall be taken on the 4th March, 187 S. An Order in Council makes certain alterations in regulations for the Volunteer Force. Any corps falling below the minimum will be disbanded. No claim for capitation will be admitted for airycorps if there arc fewer than forty efficient members on the 31st March in .any year, and such corps will be liable to bo disbanded. TBIARU. December 22. There was heavy south-east weather last night, and at about 6 this morning, the brig Craig Ellaehie parted both anchors and went as"~oi-e. Those on board got ashore all right. The Kate M'Gregor is dragging her anchors rapidly towards the beach. Wheat is quoted at from 4s. to os. Oats 3s. to 4s. Barley 3s. Gd. to 4s. Potatoes, 80s.

AUCKLAND. December 21. The Directors of the Bank of New Zealand have altered Mr. Murdoch's appointment to that of General Manager, and have appointed Mr. Murray Inspector. The total Indian Famine Fund to date amounts to L 1957.
Mr. Rowe denies that he lias formally given in his adhesion to Sir George Grey. He says lie merely paid a visit of courtesy, and will give him a qualified support. The Premier will visit the Thames and address his constituents on his return from Kawau. He will then go to Wellington, calling at Tauranga and Gishorne
Mr. J. C. Brown has gone on a visit to Cape Maria "Van Dieman and Samoa. A cricket match between the Auckland eleven chosen to play the Canterbury team and the next sixteen of Auckland, takes place to-morrow. An Agency of the Sun Insurance Company will beshortly L\-opened in Auckland. * CHRISTCHURCIT. De-ember 22. The conversion of the gauge on the North line, from broad to narrow, has been completed, and trains are running as usual. It has been reported that the Colorado beetle has been found in two places in South Canterbury.

IJOIQTIKA. December 21. Out. of twenty-four plans for the river protective works, submitted by the Hokitika Harbor Board to tiie Engineer-in-Chief, at Wellington, the one recommended by the Engineer, and adopted by the Board, was designed by Mr. James Park, of Hokitika, a young man employed it the saw-mills, who receives a bonus of L 250. Many first-class engineers competed.
