WELLINGTON. November 20. Arrived—Pelican, from Oamaru. Mr. G. E. Barton, barrister, having withdrawn from the candidature for the Mayoralty, Mr. Dransfiekl has been officially declared Mayor for the ensuing vear. November 21. The Committee on railway management reports that it is expedient that the management of railways open for traffic should be under a separate management to railways under construction ; that there should be a permanent Commissioner of Railways ; that New Zealand coal should be used on railways ; that the block system should be used on all lines where there are long tunnels ; that it is inexpedient at present to lease the railways, but that as an experiment it is desirable to lease the Auckland-Waikato Railway for seven years ; that sufficie ;t trains should be run on Sundays to meet the public require men ts ; that railway tickets should be purchaseable at shops which take postage stamps, or at the railway stations at any time during office hours. Toe present break in the DarwinBanjoewanji cable is ascrtained by tests to be about 100 milt s from Port Darwin. 0 I AUCKLAND. November 20. Cleared S'np Waimate, for London, with 27 passengers and a cargo Valued at LIBG,OOO. BALCLI'iHA. November 20. The annual Show of the Clutha Agricultural and Pastoral Society to-day was by far the best ever held in the district. The weather was delightful, and the attendance very large. Both horses and cattle showed a great improvement on former S .ows, both as regards quantity and quality. The N. Z. and A. Land Company had some fine shorthorn stock on ihe ground, and gained first prize for bull of any age, •). M'Donald being 2nd, and George Scott 3rd. Siiortioru cows, any age pany. Ayrs.iire bull, any age Tiiomas Bowie. Ayrshire cow, any ago —lst, Robinson and Co., Tokoinairiru. Draught entire horses—lst, Craig and Wylie. Bryce Brothers, Loveli's Flat, carried all before them in draught mares. There was a splendid show of draught stock, old and young. Mr. Cooinbes' Flying Dutchman took Ist prize in thoroughbred horses. In sheep, merino ram any age—lst, N.Z. and A. Land Company, Waiteptka Station. Lincoln ram, any age —lst, N.Z. and A. Land Company. Roniney Marsh ram, any age, W. Telford. There was a good show of poultry, and that of dairy produce was ttlso excellent. The whole arrangements were satisfactory. A bazaar in aid of the funds of the Wesleyau Church was well patronised throughout the day. The river is falling slightly. No damage has been sustained by the township, but a considerable portion of Ineholutha is submerged, and the crops will suiter much.
