(from the press agency.) * DUNEDIN. November 13. Messrs. Renshaw, Edmiston, and Co. to-day received a telegram that the Queen of the South, from Mauritius, had been wrecked on Aeon Reef. The crew and passengers were saved, but all the cargo was "lost. The vessel was owned by C. A. Turner, of Lyttelton, and a large portion of the cargo was consigned to Christchurch, and the insurances on it are not known there. Insurances on the Dnnedin portion are : South British, L 2,750 ; United Company, Sydney, L 2,000 ; National, LSOO At the request of Professor Liversidge, of the Sydney University, Profes3or Hutton to-day was granted permission to deliver forty lectures on geology in the Sydney University during the Lent term. WELLINGTON. November 13. A letter has been received from the Australasian Cricketers by the Secretary the Wellington Association, whose terms have been accepted by the Australians. They may be expected here by the end of January. The following vessels have arrived at London up to the 31st October :—Wanganui, from Lyttelton ; Whanpui, from Melbourne ; Julia Carney, from Adelaide ; Western Monarch and Northam, from Sydney ; Assyrian and Harrick, from Lacepede Islands. Frank Gillan, recently tried for rape on a little girl, received a flogging of twentyfive lashes to-day. The prisoner suffered severely, and howled piteously during the flagellation. Twenty-five shares in the New Zealand Shipping Company were sold by auction to-day for L 4 2s 6d each ; sixty National Insurance at 30s to 31s ; and fifty Standard Insurance at 20s. Some Union
Company's shares were put up but were: withdrawn. ■■" November 14. A deputation of the City Councillors waited upon the Premier to-day, regarding the Contagious Diseases Act, and he informed them that lie would not recommend the Government to bring that Act into force in Wellington. ♦ REEFTON. November 13. The Reef ton Jockey Club Race Pro- | gramme is issued for the 26th and 27th of December. The aggregate stakes amount to L 475. Cup, 120 sovs.; two other Handicaps, 60 sovs. each ; two Hurdle Races, 30 sovs. each ; and other events. Nominations close on 24th November ; acceptances, 21st December. * PICTON. November 13. Very rich specimens have been brought in from the Golden Point Reef. AUCKLAND. November 13. The subscriptions to the Famine Relief Fund amount to LllsO. The Fountain of Friendship Lodge of Oddfellows voted L3O from their fund. Arrived —Fairlie, from Oamaru. WANGANUI. November 13. The programme for the Wanganui Autumn Races has been arranged. The prizes offered to amount to a total value of L7lO. Dates—March 7 and 8. First Day—Hurdles, L4O; Derby, LI 00 ; Selling Stakes, LSO ; Wanganui Stakes, L6O ; Ladies' Plate, L3O ; Flying Handicap, L4O. Second Day—Hurdles, L7O ; Jockey Club Handicap, L 250 ; Daydown Cup, L2O ; Maiden Plate, LSO ; Consolation. Nominations for Wanganui Handicap, sth February. * GREYMOUTH. November 13. Mr. J. W. Twining, chemist, has been charged with obtaining money by means of valueless cheques. " He was remanded for eight days to allow the police to bring a charge of forgery against him.
