At Plevna the Russian and Roumanian sappers are close to the first Turkish parallel. The Turks revictualled Plevna on the September 23rd, and are sending twenty battalions of infantry, two field batteries, and a regiment of cavalry into the works. The Russian loss before Plevna up to September 24th was 2500 killed and wounded.
On September 12th the Russians attacked Plevna, carried two detached redoubts and the central Gravitza redoubt, after great carnage. Osman Pasha routed General Skabeloff who was outflanking the redoubts. His command was cut to pieces, and reinforcements were refused to him. Osman Pasha failed to retake Gravitza redoubt in a subsequent night attack. The Roumanians were repulsed with great slaughter in their attack on the second Gravitza redoubt. Since these actions there has been no fighting before Plevna.
All is quiet at Schipka Pass. Mehemet Ali is comma lding the eastern Bulgarian army. He advanced all along the "line on September 20th, fighting all that day and the 21st. The Turks failed at all points and fell back to their former position beyond the Lorn. A large army is collecting at Orchani for the relief of Plevna.
There was heavy fighting at Armenia from the 2nd to the 4th October between the Grand Duke Nicholas and Mukhtar Pasha. The Russians failed. Their object was to cut off Mukhtir Pasha from his base. The losses on both sides were over 1000.
The Russians admit their loss to September to be about 52,000 in killed and wounded.
The Montenegrins have been everywhere victorious in Herzegovina, half of which they occupy. The attack by them on the Albanian frontier failed.
Servia and Greece are preparing for war with Turkey. Trade in England and America is reviving. There have been numerous failures in savings banks, and extensive frauds in America.
War with Mexico is imminent, and hostilities may begin at any moment. The severe storms on the Atlantic coast on October 4th resulted in several wrecks and serious destruction of property. The special session of Congress meets on the loth to make appropriations for the army.
