The ways of the Press Agency are peculiar For tvvo or fires days the Ag ncy was kind enough to send us messages with reference to the trial of Kail Kehde, for murd> vat Christclmrch. First Ave were told that the trial of the unfortunate man was set down for hearing on a certain day ; then that the t : ial had commenced : while a third murage informed us that the " tr-al of If arl Kehde is still proceeding." There ad record of the-triil, so far as the Press .Agency was concerned, ended. Not one word did the Agency send us as to ihe result of the trial. On turning to our CJiristoliurch exchanges, we find that on Wednesday last Karl Kehde was form 1 guilty, with a recommendation to mercy. His Honor Judge John»ton, iu passintr sentence of death upon the unfortunate man, renuuked that he entirely concurred in the reeomme'ndation to mercy, and that he would forward auything the condemned man's counsel had to urge in support of the re jonimendation to His Excei.eiicy the Governor.
It- i« understood that the Government ha>e signified their desire to encourage the Uamaru Sgouj Comiauy enterprise by convey, no' stonu by rail at rates that will en.-uro a demand for it in places \vh rj the.-e is railway communication with Ua i.arn. Iu Ciiristohurch the stone is gtvatlv in favour, and will in all probability be used iu tue construction of several buildings about to be erected in that city. It has been suggested by Mr. Conyers that the
company should provide their own trucks, and, as this would not only be a decided advantage, but the only method in which the company's operations could be effectually carried out, the suggestion is Lkely to hi adopted. We are pleased to be able to state that the company's success is pretty well assured. Its promoters are meeting with success everywhere. Mr. Stephenson has been singularly unfortunate with regard to his horses eng in the Waitaki J.ickey C üb's race*. First of all his colt Satirist, which was expected to place more than one win to his owner's credit, broke down while training, and had to be scratched for nil his engagements. Then yesterday, l!ob Roy, who w ts enya.e I in the Hurdle Kace, met with an accident which necess.tated his being put to death. When the third hurdle had lieeu readied Rob Roy baulked, and on being put at it a second time he caught his hind feet on the hurdle, and so severely iujii'ed his spin', that his trainer (Havnes) ha I him kd off the c uirse and destroyed. Truly, misfortunes never come singly. A lad named George Robertson, about 14 yours of age, experienced one of the sad effects of somnambulism at an early hour this mo'iiing at Duntroon. The unfortunate lad wis slee:>:ng in the loft of Mr. Arthur's stable, and, between midnight and 1 o'clock this morning, while asleep, he got out of bed, and during his sleep-walking fell through an opening in the iloor on to the gnminl, a height of about 14ft., fracturing his right thigh. The lad was brought into 0.-unaru this morning by the train from Duntroon. and conveyed to the Hospital, where his injuries were attended to. We are pleaded to learn that he is progressing favourably.
There was no sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. We believe that J. M'Gregor, the jockey, met with a fomewhat serious accident at Duutroon last evening. Ou going into the stable to attend to a horse, the animal kicked him on the chest, dislocating his shoulder, be inflicting other injuries. After our last pigeon left the course yesterday afternoon, the only event to be run at the Dmitrnon If aces was the Cons ■latimi Handicap of 25 sovs , one mile. For this event four horses entered, and a splendid race took place. Bue Peter rushed to the front, and, taking the inside turning. 1-d round the corner. Cotton then began to jide Unknown, but was unable to get on even terms with the leading horse, \vh > won a remarkably fast nv-e by a lenuth. Time, 1 min. J!) sees. This brought to a close one of the most, success ul race meetings ever held in the district. Not a single disturbance of any kind worth mentio dug too* place, and, w til the exception of a se: ions accident t> i\ob Boy during the hurdle race, which necessitated the anim d being de-troyed, nothing oceurrc I to mar the sport. The Stewards are d 'serving of every praise for the indefatigable manner in which they worked to make the affair -uccessful, while Mr James Black, the starter, is specidly to be coniplim nted on the excellence of a'.l the starts elieet-jd by him. Mr. .Jeffreys is announced to p-eaeh in the Drill shed to-morrow evening, at seven o'clock.
It will bo observed l>y an advertisement in another c iluiim rh.it tha lie/. W. Morley, or' Christohurch, -vvill deliver a lecture on Monday evening m Wesley ("hureli «>n the subject of '• Dr. Guthrie, preacher, philanthropist, and writer." The chair will be taken at h.ilf-pasb sevjti o'ol >ek. We understand that Oamaru is to lie favoured with a prot'es-a >na! visit from Signor and iSignoia Majeroni, the great Italian actor and actress, who are at present playing in Dune lin under ongagemjut to Mr. Ho kin. 'I h-y wib appear in t e Masonic Hail for three nights—the -2 id, 23rd. and 24rh ins'ant-in conjunction with f-'o kin-s' corps dramztijue. .-ignor Majeroni was ihe piincipal uagedian iu Madam Ristori's great Italian Company, which a short tinie since astonish d the people of Melbourne, and is said to be one of the very finest actors that htu ever, visited the colonies. His representation of Corporal inion, in " I he (Jul Corporal," is declared to be about t! e best \ iece of actirg that has ever been witnessed on this side i>f the line Sisinora Majeroni is also stated to !>e a highly accomplisheil actress
