(FROM TIIK VKKSS AtiKNCY.) 0 WELLINGTON. September 10. A further telegram has been received by Dr. Lemon this afternoon, winch says that the Bataviau Cable is working intermittently, but that the messages of the 17th are still on hand.

September -JO. •A meeting was held to-day to consider the desirability of giving some public testimonial to the men who so gallantly rescued three miners from the Caledonian mine on Monday, during the inllux or carbonic aeid fas. ' A large committee was appointed, and subscriptions are to be collected. The names of the men who distinguished themselves in rescuing th lr mates at the peril of their own lives are h'adford, Leith* Morrison, and Irwin. The three men rescued are recovering ; one was several hours in the bad air insensible, m one of the chambers, and Irwin made' a dash into the chamber, and dragged the inanimate body our. An inquiry as to how the mine became flooded with gas, while the men were allowed to be working is demanded, but as the Mining .Inspectorship is in abeyance, there appears to lie no person authorised to make inquiry.

NELSON. September 10. Ih-. IViiidi. who recently went into practice withum late Dr. Oofterdl. and has had an excellent practice, committed suicide by prussic acid this afternoon. A letter lett by the deceased shows that the deed was premeditated, but no cause can be assigned.
