The Evening Mail. MONDAY, SEPT. 10, 1877.

During Saturday evening and yesterday reports of a serious disturbance faken place on 1 oard the barque Tas-o were rife throughout the town. 'J he affair, however, docs nut seem to have been of a very serious nature, thou.h it was rleemecl necessary to have three of the seamen taken to the police station. It seems that some of the hands on stopping work f.>r " Smoke ho ! at'half-past three o'clock on Saturday afternoon, helped themselves to a couple of bottles of spirituous liquors out of the captain's cabin, and having partaken of more of ihe liquor than was advisable, became intoxicated, pugnacious, and indisposed to work. The affair foimed the subject of Magisterial inquiry this morning, and a report of the proceedings will be founl elsewhere. A s-pecial meeting of the Committee of the Korth Otago Benevolent Society will be held th s evening, at 7 o'clock, win n so-ne important business will be brought forward. A meeting of lloman Catholics will be held tiiis evening at half past 7 o'clock, in the S' hool-room, for the purpose of considering the Education Bill now before Parliament.

We -would remind intending tenderers that tenders for a large number of wo'-ks required for the Wai'aki Road Board must be sent iu to the Board's office before 10 o'clock to-morrow morning.

It appears that the railway employ is stationed at Oamaru comprise a goodly number of musicians, and th-t it is their intention to form themselves into a brass baud. We hear that the tedious preliminary processes through which the majority of men have to travel before reaching musical proficiency can, in their case, be dispensed with, and that organisation and instruments only are necessary to the establishment of a real, live brass band; numbering some 16 performers. We are not aware in what manner they intend to ask the public to help them iu their laudable work; nor do we, indeed, know whether it is their intention to solicit public support at all j but we are firmly of the opinion that the band is much required, and that ample means will be forthcoming, should it be required, to encourage and assist the railway employis in carrying to a successful issue that which should provide them and the public with legitimate amusement and recreation.
