The Evening Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1877.

The Waia Maori libel case, in which the Hon. Henry K. Russell, of JS'a|iier, was the plaintiff, and the Ministry the actual de fendants has at last been decided, the plaintiff obtaining damages to the tune of LSOO. This, of course, means that the taxpayers of the Colony will be called upon to pay something over LSOOO in consequence of the Ministiy gr.it.fyiug their spleen against a political opponent by indulging in the publication of personal ma'ter in that precious Maori neAVspaper, the Waha Maori, the expense of which has to be home by the C'oiouy. What, we should like to know, becomes of the oft-repe.-ited boast of the Government that they would be able ro justify the publication of the libellous article ? Comment upon the case is needless ; the whole thing speaks for -itself. In the face of a direct voe to' the contrary passed by the House, the Government has persisted in continuing publication of the Walca Maori. WilUthe&Houi-e and country be content to allow sucfe-a miserable set of political tyrants to remain much longer in power 1 We hope and believe not. On the names of the jurors being called over at the District Court this afternoon, three were found to be absent, viz., Arthur !)(nton, James Dona dson, and William Smillie. In the case of Mr. kMiiillie a certificate was read from Dr. De Lautour to the effect that Mr. S'T-illie was unfit to attend. His Honor excused him from attendance, but remarked that the certifi ate was scarcely sufficient, a3 it did not sj>ecifiy from what cause the juror was unable to attend. His Honer ordered the other cases to be brought under his notice to-morrow moruing, as there was nothing before him then to show that the instruments which had been served upon the absent jurymen were summonses to attend at the Court on the 7th September, and said that in the absence of such proof it would be unfair to inflict a fine. We understand the Roman Catholics of Oamaru intend holding a meeting on Monday evening next, for the purpose of consideiing the EducaKou hill now before Parliament. A preliminary meeting in connection therewith was held last evening for the purpose of arranging matters. Owing to the steamer from Dunedin not having arrived as early as was expected, and the consequent detention of Judge Harvey, the sitting of the District Court was not commenced until 3 o'clock this afternoon instead of at 2. Amongst the passengers from Dunedin by the Samson this afternoon was Mr. and Mrs. Tavares, who are on their way to Timaru, where they give two entertainments, one to-morrow evening and another on Monday evening. They will appear in Oamaru on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings next, and afterwards at Palmerston. The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics' Institute convened for last evening lapsed, in consequence of there not being sufficient members present to form a quorum.

We beg to remind the Good Templars | that Mr. Clark arrived by the Samson this afterm oh, and will visit the the Rescue Lodge, 1.0.G.T , this evening for the purpose of explaining the principles and objects of Rechabitism, with a view to instituting a Tent in Oamaru. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business.

In onr ndvertising columns a sale is announced by Messr . Flen ing and Hedlcy of three fitst-class pianos, two being manufactured by Brinsmeal, and the other by Bord, to take place to-morrow, at 12 o'clock. At the Kartigi to-morrow, at midday, Mr. A. H.
