('rn.-ni the Flaws AOKXfjy.) <& WELLINGTON. September 3. The Minister for Public Works has defill the tenders for warehouse sites ~■ Lyttelton, none of them being considered snllieiently eligible. Fresh tenders will be called for. September 4. The Loan and Mercantile Agency r<reports, under date London, August 29th, as follows :—" Wool.—The competition is decreasing, and the market is weaker. Home buyers are purchasing freely, but the Continental demand is limited." —. * NAPIER. September 3. Mr. M. H. Miller reports the sale of Messrs. GaVe and Drummond's station at Wairoa to Mr. George G. Stead, of Christchurch. It consists of 9000 acres of freehold and- 14,000 acres of leasehold, and ii eludes 8,000 sheex>, some horses and cattle. • A large meeting of ladies was held today, which passed resolutions in favour of establishing a ladies' Benevolent Society. The matter has been taken up very heartily.
: LYTTELTON. September 3. Arrived —New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waimate, Captain Peek, from London, with 25 passengers and 39 immigrants for Wellington, nominated by immigrants and colonists and the Association. All well. The Waimate cleared the Lizards on June 11, and had average weather till m iking the Snares at noon on Friday, when a terrific southerly gale was encountered, which drove her past her destination on Saturday night. GREYMOUTH. September 4. The Brnnner Coal Company have struck a magnificent seam of coal on the other side of the "fault" through which they have been driving for some time. The Wealth of Nations Company declared a div'dend for the month of 3s. per scrip, and have struck a new reef in their lower tunnel showing good gold. <& INVEIIUARGILL. September 3. Burley and AVoodward, for stealing ornamental trees, were each sentenced to six months' imprisonment. The Magistrate considered the case against them clearly proved, with not the slightest excnsi-. Both men have been in constant employment here for over three years. . 4> POUT CHALMERS. September 3. Arrived —Barque Dragon, 72 days out from Calcutta. She brings 1000 tons of cargo, 200 of which are for Lyttelton. She reports the ship Inchgreen loading at Calcutta, it is supposed for Melbourne. o DUKEDLN. September 3. John Walter Grierson, for embezzling money, the property of Marshall and Copeland, was to-day commuted for trial. The half-yearly meeting of the Standar Insurance Company was hold to-day. The report and balance - sheet were adopted. A resolution was carried, the effect of which will be to abolish the principle hitherto existing of sharing the profits with the policy-holders. WAKGANUI. September 3. Wreckage from the Queen Bee has been picked up on the beach near the Wanganui Heads. Amongst other things, a chest containing weaving apparael marked '■ Hillard " came ashore. A special meeting of the Harbour Board resolved—"'That authority be asked to borrow LIOO,OOO for harbour improvements." Tne estimated revenue for uve years is LIO,OOO. The Herald advocates that Picton should be fixed upon permanently as the place for the annual prize-firing. The cost of annually preparing ranges would thus be saved, and the amount could be added to the prize-list, making the Champion Belt carry a money prize of L2OO, and the other prizes increased in proportion. CHRISTCHUKCH. September 3. Mr. L. Markey has imported from Australia two thoroughbreds—Python, half brother to Dagworth, and Hiburnia, a son of Mail Train, winner of the Queen's Vase at Ascot in 1877.
