The Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1877.
The hearing of the charge against John Chalker of having in his possession an illicit st'.ll, occupied the Court nearly the whole of to-day. The Court was well filled during the whole of the time, and considerable amusement was caussd by the manner in which Mr. O'Meagher cross-examined the witnesses. The case was remanded until to-morrow. At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Alfred Lodge, 1.0.0. F., held in the Lodge-room, Royal Hotel, last evening, a presentation of a handsomely illuminated address, suitably inscribed, was made to P.G. P-ro. Reid, who is leaving this district for Wellington. D.D. Bro. lies, in a few 1 appropriate remarks, made the presentation, and the recipient heartily thanked the Lodge, and said that although lie was leaving the district he would always be glad to hear of the progress of the Order in Oamaru.
The regular fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council will be held this evening, at a quarter-past seven o'clock.
The annual meeting of the North Otago Permanent Building Society will he held at Mr. Sumpter's office to morrow evening, at eight o'clock, for the purpose of electing officers, considering the balance-sheet, &c.
The Secretary of the Oamaru Mutual Benetib Building Society (Mr. fcumpter) gives notice that members wishing to withdraw can do so at a bonus of Ij3 per share, in accordance with Clause XVII. of the Society's rules.
The ailj'.nimed meeting of gentlemen favourable to the f rmat-ion of a Gun Cluo was he'd at the Northern Hotel last evening, ■when theie -were jjresent —Messrs. O'Meagher (in the chair), Blakesley, Lintott, Greenfield, Spence, Henry Honour, and Herbert Honour. On the motion of Mr. Greenfield, seconded by Llr. Honour, it* decided to form a Gun. Club, to be called '' 'I he Oamaru Gun Club." r J"he following gentlemen -were elected office-bearers : Mr. O'Meagher, President ; Mr. Blakesley, Vice-President; Mr. Otterson, Treasurer Mr. Blakesley, Secretary pro. tern. Messrs. O'Meagher, Otterson, Henry Honour, Herbert Honour, Greenfield, and Blakerley ■were elected a Committee. The annual subscription "was fixed at one guinea. The meeting theu adjourned. A meeting of the Committee will be held, for the purpose of framing rules and balloting for members, at the Northern Hotel, on Wednesday evening, at eight o'clock.
The usual monthly meeting of the Waiareka Eoad Board was held at their offices, Tyne-street, yesterday. There were present —Messrs. Menlove (in the chair), Todd, Evans, Miller, and Major Evans. A letter was read from the Waitalci Road Board, asking the Board to appoint a Committee to meet the Committees from the various Boards re making arrangements for an Engiueer. Messrs. Menlove, Todd, and Evans were appointed to represent the Board at the conference. Mr. George Penny wrote, asking that the road through Whit est one should be made passable. Messrs. Todd, Jackson, and Evans were appointed a Committee to report upon the matter. The Engineers report upon the cost of forming No. 2 Main District Road, from its junction with the County Iload at Whitestone to M'Naugliton's corner, was read. They stated that the cost of this work would be L2S2 10s., and recommended that a bridge should be constructed at a cost cf L6OO. It was decided that the Engineer o should prepare plans and specifications for the formation of the road, and for a bridge at a cost of, say, L3OO ; tenders to be called for the work. The Inspector was instructed to put in a culvert at Peter Millars, at a cost of LlO. The Engineers were instructed to prepare a map of the district, with closed roads, &c., shown thereon. Accounts amounting to L 93 lis. were passed, and the meeting then adjourned.
