DEFEAT OF THE TURKS WITH GREAT LOSS. [agent general's telegram.] London, August 24. A great battle, lasting two days, has taken place at the Shipka Pass. The Turks were repulsed with great loss. The Turkish armies have not yet been joined. Osman Pasha's attack on Selri was repulsed. Rustchuck has suffered much from the continued bombardment. Three hundred Cossacks, who had laid down their arms, were slaughtered in cold blood. The Russians are mobilising in great force, and an important battle is expected. An insurrection has occurred in Creti, where many Turks have been killed. The alleged Russian atrocities are said to be chiefly fabrications on the part of the Turks. The Stafford House subscriptions for the wounded Turks have almost all been embezzled by Turkish officials, and the soldiers left without surgical aid. (From the Press Agency.) Bombay, August 23, 4.55. Assan Mehemet repulsed fourteen battallions at Eske Damna. A Russian official despatch states that desperate fighting took place at Shipka Pass, on the 23rd, and continued thirteen hours. The Russians maintained their ground. The losses were heavy. Sulieman Bey telegraphs on the 21st : " Scaled the heights ; fought 14 hours ; retained the conquered position ; attacked the entrenchers unsuccessfully, but hope to succeed." London, August 24, 1.10. The latest Russian official despatch says all the attacks by the Turks on the Shipka Pass were repulsed, and the Russians maintained their position ; they have been reinforced. Fighting continues. The Turks suffered enormous loss ; the Russians' loss relatively slight. Many officers were killed. A Russian unofficial despatch reports a victory at Selvi. A Turkish unofficial despatch says Mehemet Ali achieved a brilliant victory at Eske Damna. Sydney, August 27. The following is the Herald's special telegram : London, August 25. Colonel Baker, commanding the Turkish cavalry, has distinguished himself at Eske Damna. The Turks are attempting to cross the Danube at Wicklin. The Turkish force is now operating in Dobrudscha. The English Press considers the Russian position in Bulgaria critical. In Asia Minor, since the repulse of the Russians under Melikoff, both armies in Armenia remain inactive. * MARKETS AND MAILS. London, August 24. Seventy thousand bales of wool have been catalogued, and prices have been well sustained. Wheat is in full supply. Adelaide, 67s ; New Zealand, 65s ; sprouted, 255. New Zealand flax is languid. The Brindisi mail has been delivered. Bombay, August 25. The Assam arrived at Galle with the mails on the 24th inst.
