August 10. The Lady Barkley has returned after a fruitless search for the missing boats, in the neighbourhood of Croixelles. The Naval Brigade go out in their boat to night to search. At a meeting of the Education Board, held to consider the new Bill, resolutions to the following effect were .unanimously passed : —Bible reading in schools to be optional with local committees, instead of compulsory. The course of instructions to be modified by making optional the teaching of elementary, mechanics, drawings and vocal music. The assistance, by way of subsidy, of private educational enterprise in remote districts. The appointment of teachers to be vested in local committees. Tae erection of school buildings to be left to the Board.
No tidings have been heard as yet of the missing boats from the Queen Bee. The Lady Barkley went out again last night, and the naval brigade's boat, with a crew of 20, including the second mate and one of the crew of the Queen Bee. The latter will go i-ouad Durville's Island, and will probably meet the Manawatu.
Messrs. Sharp and Pickering report the sale of the vessel and cargo for L 740. Messrs. Edwards and Co., agents for the snip, protested against the sale on the ground that the vessel had not been abandoned, and the insurance offices had therefore no right to interfere.
