DUNEDiN.

THE CITY COUNCIL WANTS FUNDS.

AN EIGHTEEN-PENNY RATE LIKELY TO BE LEVIED.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE UNEMPLOYED. July 28. There was considerable excitement in Lawrence in reference to the appointment of the County Chairman, and Mr. Clayton declined, as did two others, to stand. Thus the contest was reduced to one between Messrs. Bastings and Brown. The former secured five votes and the other four votes. A Bastingsite being in the chair had a casting vote. Mr. Bastings declines to accept any salary. The result of the Town Hall plans competition will be announced on Tuesday. The special committee had only five sets of designs submitted to them, the Council having decided upon the rejection of the others. It is not probable that the new Council will sanction any expenditure for municipal buildings, as there is a great strain on the funds, which are wanted to meet improvements in the gas and water supplies. It is gentrally believed the Council will be forced to increase the rate this } r ear to eighteenpence. Mr. Stout, M.H.R., went North yesterday. Messrs. Bastings and Brown, M.H.R. 's, will probably leave by the next steamer. The Dunedin Hospital lias received a donation of LSO from the widowed mother of a young man who died in the Hospital. The trades are arranging for a demonstration of the unemployed for August 4.
