OAMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the School Committee was held in the office of the Secretary (Mr. Hardy) at 7.30 last evening. There were present:—Messrs. Gibbs (in the chair), Sumpter, Hislop, Liddle, and Barclay, and Mr. Thornton (the Rector of the Grammar School) and the Secretary. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts for advertising from the Lyttelion Times, the Otago Daily Times, and the North Otago Times were passed for payment. FREE EDUCATION. The Secretary reported that the Visitinf Committee had sanctioned the education of two destitute children at the North School, and that he had informed the master to that effect. A letter was read from Mr. Milligan, asking that two children of Mr. Wildish, who had had his leg broken, and whose wife was dead, might receive free education at the Grammar School. Granted. REPORT OF THE BUILDING COMMITTEE. The Committee reported in detail in reference to what was required to put the School into a state of repair. The cost, the Committee stated, would not exceed £SO. On the motion of Mr. Sumpter, the report was adopted and tenders ordered to be called for the work—the tenders to be in time for the quarterly meeting, which will be held during the first week in April. APPLICATIONS FOR THIRD MASTER. There were nine applicants, and, after a lengthy discussion on the merits of the various applicants, Mr. Hislop proposed, and Mr. Sumpter seconded,""That Mr. Yates be appointed." Mr. Fleming moved as an amendment, " That the Rector be empowered to proceed to Dunedin and confer with Mr. Hislop as to the suitability of the candidates, and that he afterwards recommend to the Committee the most snitable candidate." The amendment was then put to the meeting, and declared carried. THE THIRD MASTER. There were also a number of applicants for this post. The favorites were Messrs. Fraser and Fidler ; and it was Proposed by Mr. Hislop, seconded by Mr. Fleming, and carried, "That Mr. Fraser be appointed, subject to the approval of the Rector." It Avas also determined to write to Mr. Fraser, asking him to meet the Rector in Oamaru at an early date. MRS. CRAWFORD. Mr. Fleming moved, and Mr. Sumpter seconded, " That Mrs. Crawford's salary be raised from LllO to L 125." The motion was heartily agreed to,
