C'otistable Loose, on the following day, rode up and down on the Marev»henna side of the river, but we have not heard that he attempted to get on the island. There ts a boat at Koss', and another at M'Lean's. and we cannot possibly conceive H'hy Cameron did not endeavour to get one of them aeros.3 the river, to secure the unfortunate man. The island is about three or four etvairw wide, and a ftwatter-of-a-inile long : it has grasa and flax on it. ami is now a tun lor eight or nine head of cattle. I "Wo learn by telegraph from Cromwell last evening, that the requisition to Mr. Pyke de- [ mantling his resignation of his scat in the Assembly has received 316' signatures, and the one asking the resignation of his seat in the County Council 15*5. Tlie officers in charge of the Telegraph Stations at Dunedin, Christchurch, Kelson, and Auckland, respectively, are authorised i by proclamation in the A". Z. Gazette, to frank, free from the prepayment of postage, 1 letters and parcels posted on the public serI vice. A woman named Elizabeth Blytou, aged 7<>, has attempted to drown herself at Onelitttiga, Auckland, owing to grief for the loss of her husband, wiio died six weeks ago. A boat was regularly tossed into the air tlie other day in Wellington Harbor through the sudden tautening of the mooring-chain of a hulk over which it was passing. The astonishment of the five passengers, all of wltom fotmd themselves in the water, may be imagined. The Licensing Act seems to be carried out to tlie letter in Ihmedin. In the Police Court, on Tuesday, John Hornby, of the .Anchor Motel, was charged with selling beer at 10.10 p.m., he not being the holder of a night license. Mrs. Hornby pleaded that the beer was sold by a servant. The Bench iutiicted a line of £5 and costs. A walking match of five days, for £I,OOO, was to have come off in England between Weston and an "unknown" individual. Tits re has been a gieat raid upon dogs by the police in We lington, nearly 200 summonses for non-pa - : ment of the tax having been is-tied. In one of tbe eases—against a Mr. (dadman Smith—an important principle was Mettled, n.-nncly, that a conviction cannot lie when the fctttiimons is issued after the r.-trtV!ration of a although sueli registration is not ciVectcd wili.in the time i>: escribed i hy k.w. All the tickets in Tonks' X'tZOOO sweep, first prize L"i(liH.», to be drawn at Givytumtth, on the West Co.i:t, were taken up a week ago. Pruc, and not only stole tea, sugar. &e., but had the effrontery to lay down on the bed for a time, auteh t • the fri-lit of the Voting children. A day or two since, the same or a similarly-dispo-ted ruitian entered a c-dtage near F'meo's mill, while the proprietor was away at work, opened a box, and took a few shillings ottt of a trousers pocket, besides adding to his store by taking a revolver from underneath the bed. It is to be hoped that the police will soon give an account of the thief or thieves. Concrete footpaths are coming into vogue itt America. In Philadelphia, 2\ev/ York, and other j.reat centres in America, sidewalks have been made of a concrete composed of Portland cement, sand, and gravel, wiLh the very best results. The pavement made from this concrete is found to be absolutely impervious to the action of the water, grows harder with the lapse of time, and is regarded as practically indestructible. The pavi-meut opposite the new I'ost Oiiicc in Xt.-w York liji-t been formed of this material. Tlie concrete is laid about four inches thick, the lower half con htingof four parts of sand and one of cement, and the upper part having just half the proportion of sand.
