MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council took place at the Chambers last night, the following • members being present :—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Booth, Mainland, Scott, and Morton. MINUTES AND CORRESPONDENCE. The minutes of previous meetings were confirmed, and the outward and inward correspondence read. YARE-STREET. The Engineer reported re approach to Mr. Ruddocks property in ** are-street, that it would cost from between £3O to £35 to make the required alterations. Report received, and ordered to lie on the table. THE BED OF THE CREEK. The Engineer reported that it would cost about £33 to abate the nuisance complained of by Mr. Payne regarding the smell from the old water holes in the bed of the Creek at Chelmer-street. KERBING TYNE-STREET. Some discussion took place as to the rate at which property holders on the east j side of Tyne-street should be charged for the kerbing lately completed. Ultimately it was resolved that it should'be uniform with that charged in other portions of the town, and 4s. 2d. fixed as the sum. WATER 'RESERVE AT MAEREWHENUA. Tne Mayor was requested to make the necessary application to the Waste Lands Board for the setting aside, under the 160fch section of the Waste Lands Act, of the block of land described in the Bill introduced at the session of Parliament, on behalf of the Council, as a Reserve for an intake for water supply. GASWORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Clerk read the following report:— "Your Committee recommend that the sum of £2OO should be expended in purchasing sub-mains, it being absolutely necessary that considerable extension should be laid down, so as to secure increased consumption, and for further lighting the town." Councillor Booth moved, and Councillor Mainland seconded, the adoption of the report, and that full power be given to the Gas Works Committee to carry out the steps recommended. WATER SUPPLY. The Enginear submitted a report of the approximate cost cf the land required for the route of the water channel, upon which a long discussion took place. Ultimately, however, it was resolved th.:.t a special meeting of the Waterworks Committee—which is the whole of the Council —be called for next Monday, to thoroughly deal with the question. THE LODGING-HOUSE ORDINANCE. The bye-laws under the above ordinance were submitted by the Committee, and the several clauses discussed seriatum. Some amendments were made, but the hnal consideration of the matter was ordered to be taken after the reading of correspondence at the Council's ordinary meeting. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned after a sitting of three hours.
