The Evening Mail.

FRIDAY, NOV. 17, 1876. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

•»Wf>fd.*ar*tM*ur*.»n4» drop o? ink falling upon* tftonxht may prodtwa thai wh!«b roa&a* thousands ehttite."

We mast claim the indulgence of our sufoscribeia for the late hour at which the Mail was published last evening, the delay being occasioned by onr anxiety to get as many of the jttdges awards aa possible.

About seven o'clock this morning, as a horse yoked to a «It»at-cart was proceeding np the right-of-way between Tync and Tee street?, it suddenly staggered and fell, smashing the shaft in its fali. Effort* were made to set die animal npon iU feet again, bttt it was fonnd that it had performed its last Jottrney. for, giving a few spasmodic twitches, it quickly " shnißcd off its equine cotl." The carcase lay where it fell for a coaple ©f hoars before being taken away. Hcgarty's Combination Tronpe gave their second entertainment at the Masonic Hall last evening, bnt the inclement state of the weather militated against the attendance, and the audience was not a nnmerons one. The programme was considerably varied from that of the previous evening, even to the Arabian Box Mystery, which did not | work as smoothly as on it* first production. Alter the lady was supposed to have been in

the box, and had signalled her intention-to" come therefrom, six minutes elapsed, but there was no appearance of the fair one. The Professor then explained that the chest had been placed in the wrong position, and on another essay being made, Mdlle. Zelinda, after three minutes and a half trying, succeeded in taking up her legitimate place in the box. The company, we regret to say, has not been patronised to the extent it t srhould—and no doubt would—have be?n, ! owing to Jupiter Pluvius "raining" I supreme ; but as they remain for four nights longer, we trust they will be accorded sufficient patronage to compensate for past shortcomings.
