THE BEAUTIFUL STAR INQUIRY. The following is the finding of the Court in the Beautiful Star Inquiry: —"Th.it the vessel was in charge at the time of William Hassett Casein, the mate, the master being below in his berth through illness ; that the casualty was the result chiefly of error in the judgment of the said William Hassett Casern in getting too close to the land in his course; that he was also in fault in not being more careful in looking at the bearing of Shag Point onjthe vessel, and checking his course on the chart, as well as neglecting to report the position of the vessel to the master. In the whole circumstances, the Court decides that the certificate of the said William Hassett Casein be suspended for two months, and that the certificates of master and engineer be returned, in all of which the nautical assessor concurs. The. Court will take advantage of this opportunity to add the following rider : 'lt appears from the evidence of more than one witness that it is not usual to
keep a ktokout at the bow tinder nighigl The Board is of opinion that a? looJcSaf* under night at the bow is imperatively necessary. That may guide "masters in future cases, and the. Court and assessor are further of opinion that a suggestion should be the Government to ren« der it imperative by law, that all steam vessels should have a steering-wheel on the bridge, as all vessels that are now constructed are built. An aft compass, it has been proved, is liable to be prejudicially affected by the motion of the screw, and therefore that would be avoided by the steering-wheel in all steamers ;l?eing upon the bridge. That is a for the suggestion of the Marine Board to the Go. vernment.' "
