THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.
The London correspondent of the "Da!i Times " writes :—"I hope no one will thij me disloyal if, in my endeavour to keep yJ fully acquainted with the state of popu!i| feeling on all matters of general interest!! state the indubitable fact, unpleasant thouj it be, that the Duke of Edinburgh is tl loved or respected in England. Sailors al generally supposed to be open-handed tof fault, but, if so, the Duke is the exceptiJ which proverbially proves the rule. He b| an unsavoury reputation for stinginess, ail both in conversation and the public pridl this unlovely trait is frequently exposed M the breath of scorn. The last instance & the kind is in the "World" of last weti| which, after stating that it appears toll likely that Eastwell Park, the Dukfl country seat, is to be abandoned as a rota residence, goes on to observe : —" enough, no alarm at the prospect is mM fested by the good people of Ashford, who Jj hilariously welcomed the Duke and DucheS to their 'Kentish home,' but who, not beinl overburdened with ducal magnificence or kjl perial patronage, are jaow hoping for freil neighbours, who in their liberality mfi prove worthy of the noble domain." Obstflj vant, if ill-natured, people also remark tlsfl it is worthy of notice that while the Dukeaj a frequent guest at the mansions of tIS nobility in various parts of England, ill hosts are never invited to share in the hm pitalities (such as they are) of Eastwell Pdif On the other hand, it is reported Duke is very angry at Mr. Disraeli for drsji ging the subject of Russian &<T<jression ii|| the tail end. of his " alniat.ac:" 'find him speech "on the Empress question. The BiM may be.a niggard, but he is not wthcH brains, -and he sees the utter folly of Hm Disraeli's indirect and unprovoked menace p Russia. . m
