ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
Auckland, Monday. The Australia arrived early this mornning, from Kandavan. She brings the following news items : ENGLISH AND AMERICAN. The eruption of Vesuvius is exceeclingly grand. A stream of lava is flowing towards Pompeii. The fires cast splendid crimson tints upon the clouds. The eruption is expected to last four weeks. The steamer Agrigentis, from Italian ports, collided with the English steamer Hylton Castle, off the Cape of Malta. The Agrigentis immediately sank. Of sixty-four persons aboard, nine of the crew and twenty passengers were drowned. Balicoa, the coiner of the Mint of California, has defrauded the Government of f 14,000 in-gold. Shocking cruelties to the insane in Washington Asylum are exciting indignation. Four powder magazines at Salt Lake City exploded, causing terrible devastation in the city. The damage done amounts fco over SIOO,OOO. One child's head was knocked off by the debris a mile away. Several people were killed. The Pacific Mail Company's difficulties are the topic of discussion in commercial circles. * Numerous casualties to shipping are reported on the east coast of England. Three vessels were wrecked in the Wash, and two men were drowned. A fishing boat was lost off Elgin, and nine men were drowned. The strikers in the collieries in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire now number nearly thirty thousand. A Calcutta telegram, published in the " Pioneer," announces that seventeen persons implicated in the murder of Mr. Margary, of the English expedition, will be executed at the Bahamas on May 5, in the presence of a British escort. An explosion of powder during operations at the new railway tunnel in course of construction near North, Glamorgan, South Wales, caused the roof to fall burying, all ,fche workmen. Thirteen dead bodies and a number of wounded were recovered. Search continues for the victims. A despatch from Barbadoes says riots have occurred throughout the Island plantations, houses were sacked, animals destroyed, and an enormous destruction of property has taken place. Over forty of the rioters were shot. The troops are actively employed. The city of Bridgetown is threatened, business is suspended, and families are staying in the shipping for safety. The rioters say they have the Governor's sanction fo:r their actions. The immediate recalling of Governor John Pope Hennessy is requested.
