Miss Campbell Is Speedy
SOUTH CHAMP'SHIP
(From "N.Z. Truth's*' Christchurch :Rep;) AT the opening carnival of the season, **■ . the Canterbury Centre, of the . New Zealand Swimming Association provided some performances for the local enthusiasts, comprising four minor championship events, an inter-club . relay an. A and B water-polo match, and the first half on ■ the • events for the • Yaldhurst Shfeld. competed for by primary schools. By winning the 100 yards intermediate girls' championship m 1 mm. 18 1-5 sees., and also the 33 1-3 yards ladies' handicap m the fast time of 18 1-5 sees-.. Miss S. Campbell impressed with her sterling performances, and as she is only 15 years of age, one should see her name very prominently before the public m the near future. C. Cliff won the junior boys' championship by eight yards from S. Kingdom, and appeared to take the la«t lap very easily, and m consequence his time . for the distance suffered. Had he had onposition over the concluding stages, his time would have been much better. . N. Breward carried too many guns. for J. McDonald m the intermediate boys' breaststroke" championship for ■ 100 yards, although McDonald was a past master at the turns and made up a lot of lost ground. The latter boy was the only competitor m the intermediate boys' dive. The events for , the Yaldhurst Shield were full of interest. The final of the boys' 50 yards resulted m Cocks .(New Brighton), narrowly beating his schoolmate, "Arisley, for first place, w'th John.- t ston (Phillipstown), filling thfe third -. "» position. Miss A. Morris (Richmond), early established a lead and won the girls' 50 yards easily m 42 1-5 sees., only 1-5 sec. slower than the time for the. boys' event, with the Phillipstown arid Linwood representatives. Misses. Cairns - and Hunter filling the other places. J. Smith (East Christchurch). bagged the boys' 100 yards after heading- off Murphy (Elmwood), m a keenly" contested race, the third place going to Nicholson (Normal). Murphy could not muster up. the extra spurt that was required m the last few yards. The inter-club eA'ents were keenly contested and kept the spectators on their toes, Crawford winning. the final of the men's 33 1-3 yards handicap m 18 sees., with Gibbons a close second. It is interesting to note that out of the seven heats for this event, only one ■ scratch man, Dalton, managed to get into a place. ... j- * E McConville, last years intermediate champion for New Zealand, swimming for the first time m the men's events, could only get a third. He covered the distance , m good time, but the 4 1-2 sees, he conceded the winner, proved too much of a hurdle for him. Alec Stokes, also, could only get a third m his heat, after conceding 5 sees. One official watch credited Alec, with 17 sees, for the distance. Joe Simpson, late of Dunedin, swimming In the same heat as Stokes, managed to get into second place, and finished second to Crawford m the semi-final, but m the final found his handicap too much for him, and could only land a third. By far the most exciting race of the eA'ening was the 100 yards inter-club relay handicap, which resulted m "United No. , 2 and Elmwood, No. 1, dead-heating for first place, the United team being Simpson, Rattray and Roberts, and the Elmwood representatives Cymes, urawford and Mair.
