IMPROVEMENT

Mister Pointer's Win At Brighton

(From "N.Z. Truth's" South Island Trotting Rep.) THERE were two, things about Mister Pointer's performance •at Brighton worthy of notice. Firstly, the quality he displayed m leading all the way and winning very nicely m the smart time of 3.29 3/5 was apparent to all. Secondly, there was the marked improvement shown by him m comparison with his form of the previous week at Ashburton. He started there m a two-mile race, m which the first mile was left behind m 2.23 on an extremely fast track, yet Mister Pointer drifted back to an almost impossible position over the first mile, Over the next half Mister Pointer displayed sufficient speed for "Truth's" rep. to mention him as an early winner, then he drifted j again over the last half-mile. ■' The class engaged at Brighton was' probably slightly better than that at Ashburton, yet instead of being only a moderately backed fifth favorite as at Ashburton, he was this time made first choice. This form emphasises how necessary it is that trotting stipendiaries should attend racing meetings when trotting events are on the programme, for had his running at Ashburton been noted, his connections would probably have been given the chance to explain, as they no doubt could have, how the horse improved so much m a week.
