OLD AND NEW CHAMPIONS READY

WARWICK STAKES FIRST

PASTE THIS IN YOUR HAT

THE Grand National- Steeplechase *■ favorite, Omeo, ' will be seen out this week. He is m at both Awapuni and Riccarton, but he should be found competing m the North Island. ■..'*'■ * * POON Song won a fair class hack race at Trentham with nine stone. In the Trial Plate the second day, with ten stone, he won with just the same ease. ■■• • * The handicapper got a smack at him on the third and he, gave him 10.12 m the five. He then ran third. # '. * # At Awapuni on Thursday the conditions allow him ' into a Plate with 9.12 and Roley Hatch and his onetime apprentice Tom Green must ibe feeling pleased with the outlook, which is not like the Aveather, cold and drear. "•''"•#'■ ' * # UOPWOdp ran a fourth' and two ** thirds m open sprints at Trentham early m the month. The class was good, and if he runs up to that form he will be haying them hopping at Awapuni .on Thursday. # # # pLASS wins nine times out of ten. . • Toxeiima has had the grandstand heaped on him m the Brabazon atRiccarton on Saturday, but he is used to it and he will give his kind disrespects to the handicapper. ...-,-*..•.. ; * * THERE was a time when Kalakaua ■*■ gave indications of being a good horse, but he went dog on it, for reasons best known to himself. .."'.*•' * * I Napier President Charlie Twist bought him, hunted him and then sent 'him to Gisborne. He won two. . ..'■''# * * Now he goes into a bit better class at Awapuni and he also has a stone penalty to carry, but if he is solid th« weight will be his least trouble.

THE Longbeach Hurdles at Riccarton on Saturday are run over a distance which is under a mile and threequarters. I . • ,# # * Dick Longley, who trains Amorist, has been telling his charge about this all the week and Amorist has been nodding his head. He understands completely. * # # TF Marjoram had a show of winning *■ the ten-furlong Parliamentary at Trentham with 9.5 — and there was some correct money to say that he did have a show — well, he must be highly thought of m the Clifford Handicap at Awapuni on Thursday. *' # # He only has two pounds more and the class is a great deal weaker than was the case at Trentham.

New Zealand Figures Largely In Market Quotes

BIG BACKING FOR JAMIESON PAIR (By Cable— From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative). Though it is mid-winter, the big noises for the coming spring campaign are not leading a life of idleness; and from now on they will be asked to stretch out.

THE first important event will be the * Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm on August 30, a weight-for-age race over eight furlongs. Amounis will be ready to tackle Nightmarch and L«imeriek, and if all goes well with Chide he will also be m the field. Owner T. C. Trautwein visited the track the other morning to see Chide work over seven furlongs. The gelding pleased his ow.ner and trainer by his freedom of action, and it now looks that " the chestnut has thrown oft! all soreness. If this is so he will be a thorn m the side of the weight-for-age giants. Harry Telford has given it out that he will leave Melbourne next week with Phar Lap. If that is the case the champion will no doubt be fit to be a competitor m the Warwick Stakes. With Phar Lap m, the race will be a great one. If the early betting market is any indication the New Zealand contingent is going to play an important part m the decision of the Epsom and Metropolitan double. Last week Gesture and Gay Crest were supported for a fortune, and this week big parcels were secured about Eaglet and In the Shade. Jamieson's pair are now m serious training, and on Saturday the pair ran the best of the morning, over five and eight furlongs respectively. Randwick touts are greatly impressed with Eaglet's action, and with In the Shade's fitness. He seems certain to win a race on the suburban tracks the first time he is labelled, but there will be no fancy prices on offer. Last week Carradale, runner-up to Phar Lap m both the Derbies, and the horse that ran off the course when turning for home m the Melbourne Cup, was a pronounced favorite for the Metropolitan, but support for the ex-New Zealander Glare on Monday

was so persistent that they are now equal favorites. Glare has been coupled with everything having a chance m the Epsom. Melbourne reports indicate that Glare is striding along satisfactorily. High Disdain, runner-up to Venetian Lady m the last Doncaster, has been "specked" ever since the Epsom

weights appeared, but there was genuine ring backing for him on Monday, when he was freely coupled with In the Shade and Glare. For the second occasion m recent weeks there was no racing on Saturday, rain making it out of all question. Wild Time, which came over as a member of Jamieson's team, and which is now racing at the unregistereds, finished second m the Maiden at Victoria Park op Saturday, after blowing badly m the betting. The running caused the stipes to investigate, but the connections were given the benefit of the doubt. The filly should prove a topnotcher m her new sphere.
