National Hopes Fail
NOT IN MONEY s (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) The South .Canterbury Steeplechase at .the Hunt meeting at Timaru on Saturday wrote "finish" to the prospects of two Grand National candidates m Radiate and Valves. THEIR performances m a five-horse field of poor quality were bad to the last degree and on this running neither would have a chance m the better company he will meet at Riccarton. Since his win at the last Timaru meeting Valves has been getting through a programme of work which encouraged a mild hope m his camp that some money would come their way at Riccarton and he was confidently supported on Saturday. Consequently his poor form completely bewildered his cwner and trainer and they have been left guessing. The only possible excuse for him is that he is a very lazy horse and Ernie Shaw, who had a bad spill at Riccarton thr N ee days before, found it beyond him to make Valves do his best. Radiates display was no better. He has not schooled since Trentham and towards the finish of his Timaru race was very tender m front. ■ He and Valves toiled along m the rear the whole way and neither could make any impression oh Radiac and French' Fleet, which were well clear. It appears that Dave Campbell will have a lot of trouble getting the best out of Radiate for the rest of the jumping season.
