REP. SELECTION

The Canterbury Team

i To Defend Shield (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) DERCY BING, Canterbury's hockey sole *■ se'ector, has announced his team to defend the Shield m the challenge match against Otago on Saturday next. The following is the selection: goalkeeper, H. Snook; backs, 33. Dash, C. Rogers; halves, V. Wells, B. Rogers, H. G. Hore; forwards, W. Grace, F. Fullwood, S. Bell, W. Bell and R: Davis; reserves; R. Thompson, S. Mander and G. Burke. ; When a player like Stan Mander, who has represented the South Island and New Zealand" with distinction, is unable to get into the Canterbury team, it would appear that the red-and-blaclc team to defend the shield must be a very strong eleven. ■ But the selected side has two serious ■weaknesses. At least two of the players are unfit and there will be a lack of combination and cohesion "m the forward line. - Neither of the Bell brothers has been to any of the special training practices for the team. Their repu- j tation has gained them selection, but whether they can last a fast game is another matter. : The team should have excellent defence. Snooks has been Canterbury's goal-keeper on dozens of occasions, and he is playing as well as ever. : ; The halves are a fine trio. Ben Rogers is. m great-form and has "ousted" Bert Hore from the centre-half position, the latter now being Canterbury's left -half. The team contains two- colts who are making their" first appearance m "rep" hockey, V. Wells, right-half, -and R. Davis, left' wing-forward. The selection of 'these youngsters, is very popular, as both ' have ■ pushed their way into the team by sheer merit. The three reserves are good f players. Ron. Thompson Is the most Im- ' proved back In the competition and he will compel Daßh and Rohers to keep m form to retain their position. Burke is a good stick player and a hard-working forward," who needs a little more finish and pollsh-in his style before l^e is ready for shield match
