BARRY CUP ENCOUNTER

Annexed By Wairoa Fifteen (From "N.Z. Truth's" Gisborne Rep.) W7AIROA tacked their colors to the "Barry Cup when they slipped one across Poverty Bay m Gisborne last Saturday, the visitors dancing to victory to tne tune of 12 points to 5. Both sides allowed their forwards a free hand right from the start, but had it -not been for the deadly defence of the Poverty Bay Backs the score-board would have revealed a cricket score at the finish. ■ ..-.. There were no spectacular movements to thrill the crowd, the efforts being of an individual nature for the greater part. •Once .the spectators were on their toes with excitement, for away on the other side of .the field they could see Mac. Howell careering down the touch-line. He left his opponents- standing, and galloped across m the corner, turned a complete somersault, leapt to his feet, and raced on to touch down beneath the .uprights. His brother, Eddie, added the extra points, but Poverty Bay's task was a . hopeless one for the game was then I m Its dying stages. As a whole, play was not up to representative standard, and there were times' when a team of school children could have shown better tactics. Apart from E. R. Thomas (hooker) and Keith Walters (wing- forward), 'the home forwards were lifeless, and they needed a ton of dynamite to shift them at times. The Wairoa front-rankers were m great hick; they dominated the scrums, screwing and pushing as they liked. The visitors, were superior m the tight, too, and usuaiiy gave the opposition a lively time m the line-outs and loose. "Wairoa gave a slightly better display of handling than the Poverty Bay backs, who had a gruelling time all through, and they deserve the greatest credit for the manner m which they stood up to the powerfull thrusts by the visiting forwards.
