Riding Better Than Ever
(From '.N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) IT is doubtful if Hector Gray' was ever riding , better than at present. Well on m the forties, it is really wonderful how he has retained his tactfulness and energy m. the saddle. He' stands out as being m a class by himself and certainly ininfluences keen speculation once his name appears on the number Board, no . matter what his mount may be — good, bad or. indifferent. There is no chance of his being m want of mounts so long as he retains his present form, and some owners who previously looked for the best price available 'about their charges are now preferring to take short prices with Gray aboard, rather than run the risk of missing a, possible stake. Gray's record for two days' riding at Ellerslie .and the opening day/ at Avondale : was eight wins, two seconds, one third, and two fourths out of nineteen mounts. When the A.J.C. refused to consider his .application for the privilege to ride m Sydney, they probably unwittingly did Gray a good turn, though his great riding record; since his return across theTasman will hardly be so favorably viewed by Trainer Bill Booth and others on the other side who missed the services of at real horseman. ■'-'..
