Taylor Punished Hurne In The Title Contest
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Westpprt Representative.) • Frank Taylor, of Auckland, won the bantam-weight title of New Zealand at Westport on Saturday when he won from Cyril Hume, Wellington, on a technical knock-out m the sixth round.
IT was a great scrap while It lasted, and Hume was pluck personifled.\ ■ ' After the first round the fans settled themselves ready for a good battle , and they were not disappointed as far as the fight went. From the first gong both boys hopped into it, and delivered and took heavy punishment. The Wellington boy Scored , well m infighting, but he was seriously puzzled by Taylor's lightning left. Hurne concentrated on the body and Taylor had taken Revere punishment by the time the gong "went. The second round opeiied brightly, both boys standing toe to toe and slamming m rights and lefts. Then Taylor drove Hurne to the ropes and
for a while had the Wellington boy guessing. Hurne "could not get Taylor's measure and was, a little groggy at the gong. However, m the next round Hurne came back well, opening by scoring j with a couple of stinging lefts. Hurne kept the Aucklander busy and had the fans on their toes. The come-back did not last long, however, and Taylor held the upper hand throughput the fourth, although Hurne was boxing well and was taking a great many of the punches on his gloves. ( In the fifth round Taylor soon bad the Wellington boy groggy. He battered him around the ring and twice had him through the ropes. Hurne was taking very severe punishment. With a left to the jaw Taylor sent him to the floor. H» rote at eight, the gong sounding simul- . taneoutly. Right from the start of the sixth it was obvious the fight was over. The Aucklander had Hurne down for eight and immediately after down for four. Six times was Hurne floored before the referee, Dr. McClymont, stopped the fight. Hurne was gameness itself. He came back again and again stolidly to receive his gruel, but Taylor could not put him down for the full count. His pluck pleased the crowd, who gave him a rousing cheer when he finally left his corner. Before the fight Kid Smith, of Dennlston, challenged the winner.
