MADE FIELD LOOK VERY CHEAP
Nightmarch Goes To Melbourne To Meet Phar Lap
PAQUITO LIKED IN CAULFIELD CUP
(By Cable— From "N.Z. Truth 's" Special Sydney Kepresentative.)
Probably the best handicap, horse that has left New . Zealand, is Nightmarch, which, after a brilliant Epsom win and a sterling .second m the Metropolitan with 9:12, came oiit on the, last day of ; the carnival and won the • ■ ■- two-mile weight-for-age BandwickyPlate. '
THE. gelding made the field look cheap. The local champion, Winalbt, ran third,-, the South Australian, Kidaides, separating the. winner and Winalot. Reed rode an\ ultra-confident race, being last until the turn was reached.: There he secured a nice run up the centre of the track and won,, easing up, by two lengths. • l Nightmarch is booked for Melbourne, where he will tackle the . weight-for-age cattle and the Cup • field. .-":'..-''. Mighty though he is, Nightmarch will. have to be a super-horse to beat Phar Lap m- the big two-miler. . The. Derby winner, will only have to carry 7.6 as against Nightmarch's . 9.2, Phar Lap is reckoned the equal, if not the superior, of Strephon, which is now, m England. , - . . The spring carnival concluded with' New Zealanders: haying, won four races. —Nightmarch took the Epsom and the Randwick Plate, First Acre the Squatters' Handicap, and Teri the Suburban Handicap.
, .Home Made, which was recently purchased by "Bosey",Cowell, won the Second Hurdles and followed it with a second m Saturday's Steeplechase. Dominion horses were unlucky m Saturday's Waverley Handicap. Two representatives, First Acre and-Papatu, ran second and third respectively. The race was won by King Conrad, which is owned- by George Price. Bright Glow, added another failure to her list in' the Final Handicap. The mare is not well and may do better on her return to New. Zealand. Paquito has been sensationally backed for the Caulfjeld Cup, run on : Saturday next. ■ After his good third *m the ' Metropolitan, Knight's gelding: has a. second to none chance. The Caulfield •:• mile and a-half is seldom a gruelling race and should be made to order f of Paquito. "■ The , ex-Queenslander, High Syce, rules as a strong favorite for the Cup, but Paquito is expected to show him the way home. \ '. .
