A Brilliant 73 At Hamilton
(Prom "N.Z. Truth's" Golf Cor> respondent.) J. L. Black has been playing great golf recently, and crowned all his fine efforts with a brilliant 73 . at Hamilton from the back tees. LIE was paired with D. Ralph m the 1 * Auckland — Hamilton match and from the start was playing with deadly accuracy. His driving is much longer this season and his game has become more compact m every department. Ralph holed out m 79 but was outclassed with Black's 36 out and 37 home. This week all golfers will be interested m the scores of the X.-TV. players at the Hutt Links. They play one day only for a special prize. J. L. Black, knowing the conditions well, may be m the leading position at the end of the day. With D. C. Collins, J. Drake and others, R. Wagg will have" to be In his best form to beat off their attack on» his title. ( If Collins were driving consistently, . he would about win, as he is a great match player. Again the long course at St. Andrews bothered visiting players and Hamilton defeated Auckland by 9 matches to 3. A' B division was played at Middlemore, where Auckland won 6 to 5. . The teams selected to battle for the K.-W. Cup for the Australian States have been selected and include B. L. Apperley. C. IT. Fawcett. K. Harrison. H. Morrison and S. A. Keene for New South Wales. • Victoria has a formidable team which includes such players as Ivo Whitton, A. Russell. A. \V. Jackson. W. F. Fowler and W. Edgar. Our men will have to be at their best to dispose of the latter team. Bjeak conditions and numb hands are against good golf, yet good re- . turns Were made at Balmacewen, where R. W. Dick, with 73, was home first In the medal. At St. Clalr, H. J. Pollock, with 74 nett, was the proud winner. A fine score by N l . H. 8u11— 74-4— 7o— was not good enough to win hinv the monthly medal at Gisborne. J. L. Bambill, with 83-15—67, defeated the club crack player. When the Hon. T. M. Wilford was. on world, tour, he bought a pair of stockings which he presented to R. W.; Kirkby on. the understanding they were only to, be worn on wet days.- . .*. 'They are vivid green with 'delirium tremehs" ' markings. To see them worn with the "skirt" Wynne wraps around his legs on a wet day is well worth a trip to the links. • . - v - Holes m one are quite frequent at Nelson. The latest fourteen and six holes were holed by E. H. Bisley (the 7th) and E. Vercoe (the 14th). • On a heavy course at Palmerston, E. R. Graham played fine golf to re-, turn 72jiett and win the July medal. L. Cartho is m a class on his own at. Castlecllffe. His latest scratch score, a 74 m the club qualifying rounds, was nine strokes ahead of the field. J. Kenny, one of the' founders of the Te Aroha Club, a left-hand player, still can hold his own against the younger players! His 75 nett won him the July medal. A great match player is Jim. A. Goulding, one of the five brothersall fine golfers m the north — returned a great score of 74 nett m the Ballin Cup, at Titirangi. . Mrs. C. A. Arthur, of Te Aroha, who isone of ■ the keenest, lady golfers m the Waikato was the winner of the medal match at Hamilton. Her 80 nett was the result of excellent golf. - H. T. Gillies is still a power to be reckoned with In a match. He played solid golf and putted wonderfully with his wooden ' putter .to defeat a fine young player m H. Tidmarsh m the Auckland — Hamilton match at Middlemore.; " ■;'■{'':■' '''■" Cjolfers':' say"- "A hero is "a ' : golfer who plays a mixed foursome partnered by his wife." At 'ParkvaJe,' Mrs. and Mr. C.. H. Lord won 'the mixed foursomes with the wonderful score of 66 nett. Playing m the Medley Cup, at " New, Plymouth, ..T. U' Mackay had two great "breaks." At the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, ,he holed out m "3, 4, 2. Then at the lHli, I2th and 13th-.' he reeled off 3, 2. 4. . • \P; G. Greenwood, and C. H. White combined well together/ playing m the fourball 1 best ball at Russl'ey. Their score of 9 up .landed .them, easy winners. "I do think that we," as a city council, should provWe. municipal golf links," said Rev. J. tC. Archer, mayor of Christchurch, when considering the proposal for municipal links. which the reserves committee turned down. The proposal was returned to the reserves committee for further consideration.^.. • 7 - Mrs. Wilkinson, a Harewoqd player/ ■■•• ! "J In the past few weeks has reduced her handicap 13 strokes. She has improved wonderfully this season. The F. S. Ballin Cup qualifying round I at Titirangi drew a huge field and L. Williamson excelled m the adverse conditions.
