OVER BIG FENCES
Kilburn To Be Given Opportunity , (From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) Though Kilburn missed the right money each start up north, some good may eventually result from the trip. LIE only started twice, and was up ~* second m both hurdle engagements, which more than returned expenses, for his portion was £ 150. In both, engagements he gave proof that he can clear hurdles safely — and the fences at Ellerslie are not pf the easy order. He also gave proof that he can stay, for he was not tiring of the journey m either of the two-mile contests. * ■ And the racing came at the right time to fit him for winter engagements. He was schooled over a few of the Ellerslie steeplechase obstacles before being taken back to Rangitikei and he showed no dislike for the business. From this it may be gleaned a steeplechase programme is already mapped out for Kilburn, and if he fails to gather m some chips from that department of the game, it should not be for the Avant of jumping ability or lack of staying powers. It can only be that he will be lacking m pace. . *
