COMB owners seem to he under the *■* f. impression that this work must be carried out whether the engine is running well or not. As a matter of fact, it is quite^unnecessary. The engine does not need de-carbonising until the internal conditions demand It, and these can be detected- by the running of the engine, which will pink or knock. . This state of affairs frequently does not arise till 5000 or 10,000 miles are | run, and, furthermore, it is much better to let the engine alone as long as it Js. running at full efficiency. The engine, when it is new, is certainly more liable to form carbon, but this is not because of any inherent tendency to do so, but simply because m its early stages it is kept practically swamped with .> oiL : ] '
