THAT ROTORUA AFFAIR

Delayed Verdict Keeps Several Jockeys In Suspense (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) There was a decided stir m racing 1 circles up north on the eve of the Great Northern meeting*.

IT became known that the Rotorua . officials were likely to come to a definite decision regarding incidents surrounding the high-weight events on their February programme. The horsemen concerned would feel relieved when it was announced that no finality had been arrived at, for it assured them the privilege of earning riding fees and percentages at the big three-day fixture. i It was noted that there was a general desire on the part of horsemen generally to "hurry up" and earn every bean that was offering. In short, the Rotorua officials did no more at last Friday's sitting than to hear fresh evidence and adjourn the matter further. In usually well-informed circles ther,e is an impression that the affair is looking even worse for those concerned as time goes on. * . The view is held that it will be nothing short of miraculous if suspensions are riot meted out to some prominent hurdle horsemen. The inquiry should do a lot of good, if only to make it clear tfjp,t no set of

jockeys will be allowed to take matters into their own hands when it comes to sorting out winners.' This is no suggestion from "N.Z. Truth" that there was any actual "fixing" of races at Rotorua, but nevertheless it appears to be common, property that the Rotorua officials have been tackling their job with the idea of finding out whether there was any deliberate "planning" on the part of riders. The final result of the inquiry should make interesting reading, if only given m full to the press. „ . Immediately after the Great Northern meeting there should be some move . towards "finality, for v at least three or four horsemen are .'being: tortured with suspense. ; > ■ ;, — ■ WANTED SELL. .
